Acrylic
The general-purpose sheet — clear, colored, frosted, plus mirror, glitter and pastel.
Acrylic (PMMA, sold as Plexiglass) is what most jobs want: it is optically clearer than glass, holds a polished edge, laser-cuts cleanly and comes in a color range nothing else matches — including mirror, glitter and pastel sheet for signage, display and craft work. It is stiffer than polycarbonate and machines more predictably, at the cost of being easier to crack under a sharp impact. Choose it for displays, signage, glazing, covers, risers and anything where appearance matters.

The impact-resistant sheet — where acrylic would crack.
Polycarbonate (sold as Lexan) trades a little clarity and scratch resistance for enormous toughness — it takes an impact that would shatter acrylic and bends rather than breaking. Choose it for machine guards, safety glazing, protective covers and anything at risk of a real knock. It is not a laser material: it scorches and gives off fumes, so cut it mechanically.

The tough, slick workhorse sheet in natural, white, black and gray — jigs, fixtures, wear strips and machine parts.
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is the tough, slick, easy-to-machine sheet that fabricators reach for when the part has to work rather than look pretty: jigs and fixtures, wear strips, machine guards, sliding surfaces, tank and cabinet parts. It cuts and drills cleanly, does not rot or splinter, and takes a hard knock without cracking. We cut it to your exact size on a saw, with a square edge and no polish option, because HDPE does not polish. Natural is the milky, semi-translucent sheet, from a thin 0.060" up to 1"; white, black and gray are UV-stabilized for outdoor and marine work. Light foam board for signs and displays in eight colors, plus Type 1 rigid sheet for fabricated parts.
PVC sheet comes in two very different forms, and we cut both to size. Expanded PVC, the foam board sign shops run on, is light, stiff for its weight and has a matte surface that takes paint, print and vinyl well: signage, displays, exhibition panels, mounting boards, cabinet backs and models. It comes in white and black up to 1" thick, and in blue, dark gray, light gray, yellow, green and red, colored through so a cut edge matches the face. Type 1 rigid PVC is a dense, opaque gray sheet that machines, drills and taps cleanly, from 1/4" up to 1-3/4", for fabricated parts, enclosures, brackets, jigs and covers where clarity does not matter. Neither is a substitute for acrylic where looks count: PVC is not optically clear. Every piece is saw cut to a square edge; rigid PVC can be diamond polished, foam cannot. Which one do you need?
If it needs to look good, be optically clear, take a polished edge or go in a laser, use acrylic. If something might hit it hard — a guard, a shield, glazing at ground level — use polycarbonate and accept that it scratches more easily. Most people ordering plexiglass want acrylic; most people who have already broken something want polycarbonate. The full comparison covers strength, clarity, machining and cost side by side.
If the part has to work rather than look good — a jig, a wear strip, a guard, a sliding surface — use HDPE: slick, tough, easy to machine, and it cannot be glued. If it is a sign, a display panel or a mounting board, use expanded (foam) PVC; for an opaque machined part, enclosure or bracket, rigid PVC. Neither is clear, and neither takes a flame-polished edge.
Cutting for a laser?
Order acrylic sized to your machine bed rather than trimming a full sheet — the craft & laser range lists the colors makers use most, and each machine page gives the exact size for that bed. Never put polycarbonate or PVC in a laser — polycarbonate scorches and PVC releases chlorine gas — and expect a poor edge on HDPE. Mirror acrylic cuts on a CO2 laser only, never a diode.
Sizes and thicknesses
Every sheet is cut to order, so you are not limited to the standard sizes — enter any width and height within our range and the price updates as you type. Thicknesses run from 0.040" to 4" in clear acrylic, with the color range concentrated in the thicknesses people actually use; polycarbonate from 1/32" to 1"; HDPE from 0.060" to 1"; PVC from 1/8" to 1-3/4". Heavy thicknesses lose their largest sizes to the parcel weight limit, and the size list on each page trims itself. The thickness guide maps thicknesses to jobs, and nominal vs exact sizes explains why a sheet sold as 1/8″ does not measure exactly 0.125″.
